IndexNow for Bing

How Idex tells Bing about product changes, what it sends, and how to switch it off.

IndexNow lets a store tell search engines that a page changed, instead of waiting for them to notice. Idex uses it to tell Bing, which feeds Copilot, when a product is added, edited or fixed. It’s on by default, on every plan.

How it’s set up

IndexNow needs a small key file at your store’s address, so Bing knows the requests come from you. Idex adds one URL redirect to your store, from the key file’s address to Idex. On Schema & AI files, the IndexNow (Bing) card shows Setting up, then On.

Before sending pages, Idex checks the key file again (at most once a day, or every hour after a problem) and adds the redirect back if it’s missing.

What Idex sends

  • The pages of products that are active and published to your online store, when a product is created or edited, or when a fix you approved changes it.
  • Each address is your main domain plus the product’s page, like https://yourstore.com/products/oak-side-table.
  • A page is sent once it hasn’t changed for a minute. Idex sends every five minutes, and doesn’t send the same page again within an hour.

Collections, pages and deleted products aren’t sent. Requests go to api.indexnow.org, which shares them with the search engines that use IndexNow, including Bing.

Check what was sent

The IndexNow card lists the last five sends: when each went, how many addresses it had, why it was sent and whether Bing Accepted it. The reasons are Fix Studio approvals, New products and Product edits.

Turn it off

Use the switch on the IndexNow card. Turning it off clears any pages waiting to be sent and removes the redirect. Uninstalling Idex doesn’t remove the redirect, so turn IndexNow off first if you want it gone, or delete it later from your store’s URL redirects in Shopify admin.

Password-protected stores

Bing can’t read your pages or the key file while your store has a password. IndexNow starts once the password is removed.
